Hamas Responds to U.S. Ceasefire Plan, Requests Changes and Lists Demands 🇵🇸 🇺🇸 🇮🇱

  • Hamas responded to the U.S. ceasefire proposal, offering 10 living and 18 dead Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners.

  • Hamas reiterated its core demands for a permanent truce, complete Israeli withdrawal, and continuous humanitarian aid.

  • Hamas submitted its response with requested amendments, presenting what was effectively a new counterproposal.

  • The U.S. envoy called Hamas's response "totally unacceptable" and urged them to accept the original framework for talks.

  • Israel agreed to the U.S. proposal but insists on the right to resume hostilities after any temporary pause.

  • Hamas felt the U.S. offer was less generous than previous ones but feared escalating Israeli offensives if they rejected it outright.

  • A Hamas official criticized the negotiation process, feeling it was biased towards Israeli terms.

EU "strongly regrets" U.S. steel tariff increase to 50% and eyes countermeasures 🇪🇺 🇺🇸

  • President Donald Trump announced on Friday doubling tariffs on steel imports to 50% from 25%.

  • The new higher import duties are set to go into effect on June 4.

  • The European Union criticized Trump's move, stating they strongly regret the announced increase.

  • An EU spokesperson said this decision adds further uncertainty to the global economy and increases costs.

  • The EU is prepared to impose countermeasures, including in response to the latest U.S. tariff increase.

  • Existing and additional EU measures will automatically take effect on July 14 if no mutually acceptable solution is reached.

  • The EU had previously paused its countermeasures on April 14 to allow time for negotiations.

  • A U.S. court order halting nearly all of Trump's country-specific tariffs was recently paused by an appeals court.

U.N. Nuclear Watchdog Reports Increase in Iran's Near Weapons-Grade Uranium Stockpile 🇺🇳 🇮🇷

  • The U.N. nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, reported that Iran has increased its stockpile of uranium enriched to near weapons-grade levels.

  • As of May 17, Iran possessed 900.8 pounds of uranium enriched up to 60%, an increase of nearly 50% since February.

  • Uranium enriched to 60% is considered a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%.

  • The IAEA expressed "serious concern", noting Iran is the only non-nuclear-weapon state producing such material.

  • The IAEA chief warned that Iran has amassed enough near-weapons-grade uranium to potentially make "several" nuclear bombs.

  • A second confidential report from the IAEA found Iran's cooperation on clarifying questions about undeclared nuclear sites has been "less than satisfactory".

  • Based on Iran's lack of answers, the IAEA concluded that three specific locations (Lavisan-Shian, Varamin, and Marivan) and possible related sites were part of an undeclared structured nuclear program using undeclared nuclear material until the early 2000s.

  • These reports were released amidst ongoing talks between Tehran and Washington regarding a possible nuclear deal.
