U.S. and Iran Begin Indirect Nuclear Negotiations in Oman
The United States and Iran held indirect talks in Muscat, Oman, to discuss the future of the Iranian nuclear program.
Both Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and President Donald Trump described the initial sessions as a positive start toward diplomacy.
Negotiators have tentatively scheduled a follow-up meeting for early next week to continue the dialogue.
Iran has restricted the scope of the talks to its civilian nuclear program and its right to enrich uranium, explicitly excluding its missile program from negotiations.
The U.S. administration is utilizing military leverage through the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier group to exert pressure on Tehran.
While talks were underway, the U.S. issued new sanctions and tariffs targeting Iran's oil exports and countries doing business with the nation.
President Trump warned of "very steep" consequences if a deal is not reached, while Iran has threatened to target U.S. military bases if it faces an attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet with Trump to discuss including ballistic missiles and regional proxies in the negotiations.
The talks follow a period of extreme tension, including military strikes on Iranian sites and widespread internal unrest within Iran.
Both nations acknowledge that overcoming deep-seated mutual mistrust remains a primary challenge for reaching a lasting agreement.
